AN OPPORTUNITY TO JOIN THE LARGEST AND ONE OF THE LONGEST ESTABLISHED SCHEMES IN THE COUNTRY

We have 48 vacancies to commence in August 1999 and are able to offer flexible training ranging from one year in General Practice through to a full three-year structured rotation. Opportunities also exist for part-time training.

The Scheme is based in Newcastle upon Tyne and benefits from close links with the Medical School. Library and other academic facilities are excellent. We have a brand new teaching centre at our disposal.

Our size enables us to organise separate streams for those wishing to become GP principals and those seeking a more limited commitment. We welcome doctors who are unsure of their requirements, and merely wish to sample General Practice for six months. The practices offer a complete range of experience from rural to inner city.

The hospital component is provided in a variety of selected and supervised posts in hospitals throughout Northumberland, Sunderland, Durham, Newcastle, North Tyneside and Gateshead. These offer experience in General and Geriatric Medicine, A&E, Psychiatry, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Community Paediatrics, Palliative Medicine, ENT, Ophthalmology, Dermatology.

Individual programmes offering maximum choice are tailored to match your needs.

The academic programmecomprises weekly half-day sessions during the general practice phase of training combined with an innovative modular programme during the hospital based component.

The sessions are based on work in small groups and seek to align the educational programme to the needs of each group. GP Registrars completing the scheme have been consistently successful in the MRCGP examination. A course to prepare candidates for the examination, using current members of the panel of examiners of the RCGP, is provided.

The hospital posts provide relevant experience for other postgraduate diplomas, e.g. DRCOG, DCH, FP Cert.

The area extends from Berwick in the north to Weardale in the south. It includes a large unspoiled and outstandingly beautiful rural region with superb outdoor recreational opportunities.

Newcastle and its surrounds offer theatres, galleries and excellent restaurants, shopping and night life.
